HDD Showcase

Got an HDD project in the works? Here, four manufacturers highlight their HDD products.

Ditch WitchDitch Witch

With its 60,000 lbs of thrust and pullback and 9,000 ft-lbs of rotational torque, the Ditch Witch JT60 All Terrain horizontal directional drill gives operators the flexibility of a smaller footprint drill without losing power. The machine’s patented two-pipe drilling system gives more power to the bit than any other rock-drilling system in its class, says the company. The JT60 All Terrain will come factory-equipped with the proven Ditch Witch GPS offering at no additional charge. Users can remotely view engine hours, operational hours, service reminders and various other performance criteria while gaining awareness into operator practices, idle time and service needs. American AugersAmerican Augers

American Augers’ MCM-300 is a customer-focused fluid cleaning system for drilling rigs in the 100,000-lb class and below. With unique mounting regulations in mind, the MCM-300 supports drillers in meeting these ever-increasing guidelines. This, coupled with the pricing pressures in HDD, allows overall operating expenses to be reduced by having a very effective and size-conscious fluid cleaning system that will significantly reduce both drilling fluid cost and disposal. The MCM-300 features a single deck shaker design, single Krebs de-silter/de-sander cone, four in-tank mud guns, a solid working platform with mud palette storage space, dual discharge ports and adjustable shaker motors. VermeerVermeer

Vermeer’s D9x13 S3 Navigator HDD — the first of the S3 generation of drills — features
improved hydraulic efficiency and enhanced speed for greater drilling performance. The D9x13 S3 is designed for installation of utilities such as communication, power, gas and water, as well as some limited sewer applications. The D9x13 S3 has a 44-hp Kubota Tier 4 Final engine, delivering 9,000 lbs of thrust/pullback and 1,300 ft-lbs of rotational torque. A new hydrostatic hydraulic system for the thrust and rotation circuits increases the system efficiency, allowing better use of engine horsepower and increasing the D9x13 S3’s productivity. RailheadRailhead

The IncrediPull puller from Railhead quickly attaches to the company’s Incredibit or DirectBore rock bit for the direct pullback applications required by fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) projects. There are no cut away slots in the bit and no bolts or mechanical fasteners to worry about. In fact, this puller will fit the Railhead Incredibit or DirectBore a crew already owns — there’s no need to buy a new bit. Simply remove the center tooth, install the puller, hook up and go.
