February 2010: Feature Story

Auger Boring and Drilling Showcase

Shooting through earth like a productivity-seeking missile, carving a tunnel that is straight and solid, auger boring machines and horizontal directional drills prove there’s more than one way to install utilities. Check out the latest and greatest trenchless installation methods.

Barbco Roller Cone Cutting Head

Barbco now offers all roller cone cutting heads 18-in. and larger on a retractable base. This innovative idea allows the cutting head to retract the outside gauge cutters to be extracted through the casing and reinstalled after inspection. The head expands to over cut 1-1/2 in. larger than the outside diameter of the casing by turning it clockwise and retracts to 1-1/2 in. less than the outside diameter of the casing by turning it counter clockwise for retrieval. With a patented duel-cam action, the gauge cutters are mechanically opened and closed for positive engagement.

McLaughlin ON TARGET System

Up until now, auger boring contractors were limited to a steering head that offered only horizontal or grade direction changes during the bore. The ON TARGET system allows contractors to also control the direction of the bore in a lateral movement, providing more accuracy for difficult on-grade bores ranging from 16 to 60 in. in diameter. The cutting path — grade and lateral movement — of the steering head is controlled by hydraulic actuated flaps that open and close to keep the head on the intended path providing a more accurate bore. A built-in vertical alignment sensor provides continuous monitoring of grade, while twin line projection halogen lights enclosed in the steering head offer the ability to check and maintain line throughout the bore. Because the ON TARGET system installs on-grade/on-line casings in one pass compared to the multiple passes required with pilot tube guided boring, contractors have the ability to complete more bores in a time-efficient manner.

ICON Bohrtec Auger Boring Machine

ICON adds a powerful guided auger boring machine to its extensive product line. The Bohrtec BM600LSC machine has been designed to install large diameter jacking pipes with a maximum outside diameter of 50.39 in. from a 13.8-ft shaft for a 2-m long pipe and a 10.5-ft shaft for a 1-m long pipe with 262 tons of jacking force, 112 tons of pullback force and 36,878 ft-lbs of torque. The BM600LSC is specially designed to work with a 156-hp hydraulic variable speed pack. Unlike other machines, the jacking frame of the BM600LSC can be easily extended to accommodate a variety of pipe and lengths up to 60-ft. The BM600LSC can work with existing augers without the use of a theodolite guidance system and bore conventionally through all types of ground conditions, or it can be used with the pilot tube method.

American Augers 84/96-1800 NG

The 84/96-1800 NG is one of the biggest and most powerful auger boring machines available. The standard model is designed with a 300-hp Caterpillar C-7 Tier III diesel engine and a 10-speed transmission. The machine will excel with 1,800,000 lbs of thrust and 272,236 ft-lbs of maximum torque. The 84/96-1800 is equipped with a 6-in. hex and has a working range of 24 to 84 in. Contractors can select to modify the machine with an optional 96-in. master pusher. The next-generation design benefits include the Quik Tran fast return system that provides up to 20,000 lbs of push/pull at high speed and a Quik Split frame design that allows the machine to be separated into sections for faster and easier lifts into and out of the working pit.

Akkerman Powered Reaming Head

Akkerman Inc., of Brownsdale, Minn., has created a new product for its guided boring machine (GBM) line — the powered reaming head (PRH), an upsizing tool that is part of the third step of the GBM process. The PRH can be configured to 14-, 16- and 20-in. outside diameters and is designed to work in 96-in. minimum inside diameter or trenchbox shafts. The PRH features separate jetting lines on reaming head arms to lubricate spoils and separate lubrication lines on the rear section to reduce jacking forces on the pipe. The PRH features an auger drive for spoil removal to the reception shaft. The PRH operates with a standard jacking frame, P100Q and P150Q power units, uses standard GBM 11-in. outside diameter thrust casings and is controlled by the GBM operator in the launch shaft.

TT Technologies Grundodrill 4X

The compact Grundodrill 4X is designed for residential service, small diameter main installations, last mile operations and gas pipeline applications. It offers 9,800 lbs of thrust and pullback. Using the compact drill is less intrusive and ideal for areas where larger units are not an option. The drill features a dual hydrostatic pump system and a four-auger stake down system that provides greater stability. The Grundodrill 4X also comes with the exclusive Smart Vice system that performs vice cycling operations automatically.

UNIHammer

The UNIHammer was meticulously designed and patented by a drilling contractor — offering a premier rock tool. A variety of custom-designed UNIHammer bits fit directly on the end of any directional drilling hammer allowing for more aggressive steering though dirt, rock or even granite. A specific [and secret] metal compound is used to ensure longer bit life and housing life. Designed and tested for everyday use, not just rock boring, giving you a better return on your investment.

Barbco Hex Auger

In recent years, auger boring projects have become more challenging, increasing in distance and diameter. In turn, horizontal earth boring machines have become more powerful. As projects of large diameter are reaching longer distances, Barbco has recognized the need for a more durable and reliable 5-in. hex auger. With 10-in. outside diameter drawn over mandrel (DOM) tubing, a 5/8-in. thick wall, heavy-duty 5-in. hex bushing and a patented Box Gusset, Barbco has raised the bar in auger strength and dependability.
