CompactSpace
A Place for Small Equipment
By Jason Morgan

Congregating on cramped jobsites, small equipment builds a social network of productivity. Compact excavators and skid steers work in dig-and-load tandem. Compact utility loaders (CUL) navigate narrow corridors of residential fences. Compact wheel loaders outfitted with pallet forks move materials. And utility vehicles (UTV) swiftly transport crews across the jobsite.
To help you get to know the young crew of new compact equipment, “CompactSpace” gives manufacturers a place to post machine specs and pictures on the pages of Utility Contractor. Over the next nine pages, you’ll find the details on the newest machines from Bobcat to Volvo. Manufacturers detail the machines’ favorite applications and current incentives and benefits. So peruse through the profiles and maybe you’ll find a new mechanical friend to add to your own equipment network.

Case’s Latest Blog Entry
Posted by Jim Hughes, Marketing Manager for Case Construction Equipment

“Case is offering incentives to buy new equipment. Customers can finance through a standard retail contract, an operating lease or a long term rental. Each one of those options have different terms and rates that are available to best match with what the customer wants. Leasing can provide lower payments than a standard retail contract, so if a customer has limited funds, this may be an attractive alternative. Customers also have the option to structure their lease payments to coincide with their revenue stream, making cash flow more efficient for them. Also, a customer has the option to structure his or her lease as a walk-away lease, meaning he or she can terminate the lease at set points in the contract (i.e. 12 months, 24 months, etc.). It’s best to check with your local dealer for more info.”

“All Case machines are designed for maximum productivity, ease of operation and easy maintenance. These are the key drivers that put money in the pockets of all contractors.”

About Case

Case’s new Series 3 skid steers and compact track loaders are the latest upgrades to the Case equipment line. Clean-burning, Tier III certified engine power highlights the Case 400 Series 3 skid steer loaders and compact track loaders. With engine improvements come increases in horsepower and torque across the board, with net horsepower for the lines ranging from 57 to 83 and up to a 53 percent increase in torque, depending on the model. The new cabs available for all Case 400 Series 3 models feature increases in headroom and lap-bar width, along with improved forward, side, rear and overhead visibility. The compact track loaders also feature industry-exclusive side lighting standard, giving you 360-degree visibility when working in low-light conditions or after dark.

All 400 Series 3 skid steer loader and compact track loader models are built to start in colder temperatures. In fact, they are tested to start unaided at 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-17 degrees Celsius). Single point daily service checks and an easy tilt ROPS make maintenance easy to perform.

“The WA50-6 is well suited for working in nurseries, chip yards, landscaping, light construction and any other application that requires a compact design.”

About Komatsu

Amidst the host of machines the manufacturing giant offers, the WA50-6 compact wheel loader is the newest machine in Komatsu’s army. The WA50-6 features KOMTRAX, which is a wireless machine monitoring system that provides machine location, hour meter reading, daily operating times, out of area notifications, night time lock and residual fuel level. Notifications are sent to key people via e-mail or text message. This is standard equipment on the machine and includes a monitoring package at no cost.

“We’ll work with buyers in these turbulent times. Special finance programs, cash in lieu of financing and low-rate financing programs are available to qualified buyers. It’s a good idea for a buyer to explore all financing avenues to cater a program to meet their needs.”

The WA50-6 also has a new “Delta boom” design that improves visibility of the front tires and attachment from the operator’s seat. And a three-mode traction control function provides flexibility.

P Mode is appropriate for operations requiring an extra burst of rimpull on demand such as leveling, grading and excavating.

N Mode is used in V-shape loading, aggregate loading and load-and-carry applications.

S Mode is selected when the machine is being operated in soft or slippery applications such as snow and mud.

Ditch Witch Trencher @ UtilityContractor

The two new tiny walk-behind trenchers from Ditch Wich — the RT10 and the RT12 — feature fully hydrostatic steering for easy handling and come with your choice of high-flotation tires or heavy-duty tracks that oscillate. Unlike rigid tracks, these “walking” tracks adjust more easily to uneven and rough terrain. Both units also feature a trail wheel that increases stability and reduces breakover when loading and unloading or going over a curb. The 11-net hp RT10 is expected to be a popular rental item among homeowners and small contractors. For bigger jobs and longer runs, the RT12 is equipped with 16 gross hp and an oil cooler that keeps its Vanguard engine running strong even on the hottest days.

“One of the most recent initiatives is New Holland’s Snow Central Lease. The targeted campaign offers special financing on all New Holland skid steers and compact track loaders, compact wheel loaders and loader backhoes. The Snow Central Lease provides customers an opportunity to utilize the latest and most productive equipment while increasing payment flexibility and allowing for predictable budgeting through annual skip payments. During the 2009/2010 winter season, Snow Central operating leases are again available on all eligible units until the end of 2009.

“New Holland Construction, in cooperation with its financing arm CNH Capital, offers a wide range of attractive programs and financing options to its customers. For details, depending on specific product line and customer needs, contact a local dealer.”

“New Holland’s mid-size excavators with short radius platform and integrated noise and dust reduction system (INDR) are ideal for work in urban, space-restricted environments that require high performance, maneuverability and control and, at the same time, reduced noise levels and low engine emissions.”

About New Holland

New Holland machines have an eye for detail. The latest additions to the New Holland lineup are additions to the machines themselves. New Holland now offers an angle blade option for it’s E35B and E50B compact excavators. Whereas standard straight blades can cause windrowing to the side of the blade, the angle blade adjusts ± 23 degrees to push dirt to either side of the machine when backfilling and grading. In addition, the new four-way blade design offers up to 22 in. of lift height, as well as exceptional vertical clearance and deep dig capability of up to 17 in. of dig depth.

To keep operators comfortable, the E70B and E80B offer the integrated noise and dust reduction system (INDR). Not only does the INDR lower operating noise levels by up to seven percent (5 dbA), it also improves engine and hydraulic system cooling and extends air filter life by pre-screening outside air.

“Bigger or biggest is not always the best. In today’s economic environment, contractors need to look at their most common applications and invest in the excavator that offers the features that best fit their everyday needs. Rental is an excellent alternative when the bigger or more unique jobs come along. That said, Wacker Neuson does offer zero percent extended term financing and a two-stoke, oil-injected Wacker Neuson rammer with every excavator purchased.”

“The new 28Z3 excavator, like all the Wacker Neuson machines, is built for the contractor who expects and demands high-quality, durable equipment.”

About Wacker Neuson

Among the three site dumpers, seven wheel loaders and seven compact excavators, the 28Z3 excavator is the newest offering in the Wacker Neuson compact product line. It’s a zero tail swing machine that never allows the rear of the machine to hang over the tracks. Like the full excavator line, the 28Z3 offers the torsion-resistant X-shaped chassis frame, solid welded structures and steel castings.

Wacker Neuson’s pins and bearings are purposely designed to be oversized. On high stressed bearings, they are supported by replaceable hardened steel bushings with special machined grease grooves. These bearings, pins and bushings mean the machines can withstand heavy use and many types of applications. This means that the contractor will have lower maintenance cost and higher resale value.

“One of our best incentives is our exclusive three-year, 3,000-hour warranty. Currently, our most popular financing option is a zero percent for a 60 month program. Now is probably the best time in years to drive a great bargain with manufacturers.”

The optional blade extension:

  • Extends the width of the blade so the tracks of the machine do not immediately run over the dirt spoils.
  • When filling a trench, it allows the excavator tracks to be further away from the trench wall, which can help prevent the trench wall from caving in which could cause a rollover.
  • The blade with moldboard extensions, extend at least to the edge of the track so the blade will scrape up next to a wall or jobsite obstruction without the tracks rubbing against the wall.
  • The extensions’ outside edges are angled to efficiently work right up next to a wall or jobsite obstruction.
