Utility Construction EXPO ‘10 Wrap Up

When the cool winter sent construction projects into hibernation, contractors from all areas of the utility industry flocked south for the Utility Construction EXPO ‘10. The warmer climate of Orlando, Fla., hosted the event that touted the “All Together Now” theme, which shined through every aspect of the show. Exhibitors, sponsors and speakers, not to mention the attendees, all brought a positive energy, despite the dark economic climate cloud still lingering overhead.

“As chairman of Utility Construction EXPO ‘10, I want to thank each and every one of the participants. It is clear that these companies are true industry leaders,” said Ron Nunes, RT Nunes and Sons and EXPO ‘10 Chair. “They realize the importance of industry involvement even in difficult economic times. As I visited each booth, it was encouraging to see all of the vendors, sponsors and contractors and their level of participation proves that our industry will prevail during these difficult times.”

The tradeshow floor gave exhibitors the opportunity to show off their latest equipment and service offerings and chat with attendees. When attendees weren’t busy with exhibitor booth visits or insightful product showcase presentations, they could peruse the NUCA silent auction, which ran throughout the show floor hours.

“As an exhibitor and sponsor, I was particularly pleased with the addition of the product showcase to the exhibit hall,” said Roger Mohr of John Deere and EXPO ‘10 Vice Chair. “This year’s speakers were timely and relevant. Each of them delivered practical messages that all attendees could take home and implement. Despite the current economic situation, I felt a sincere appreciation from the contractors for the exhibitors and sponsors who were there and showed their support and long-term commitment to the industry.”

For those who may have missed it, or for those who want to look back fondly, check out the next three pages of photos from the events. And make sure you mark your calendar for next year’s Utility Construction EXPO ‘11 — “The Executive Experience” at the beautiful El Conquistador Resort in Las Croabas, Puerto Rico, Jan. 18-21.

The Board of Directors works closely with NUCA’s day-to-day staff management team to implement the association’s operational and program goals, which focus on advocacy, knowledge transfer to members and the improvement of member-company proficiency and financial performance. Some of the Board’s top priorities this year include continued new chapter development, membership growth, association rebranding and legislative initiatives in Washington, D.C.

Forty Nebraska utility construction professionals gathered in Gretna, Neb., on Sept. 10, 2009, to discuss plans for NUCA of Nebraska and tackle critical issues impacting the industry.

NUCA of Nebraska Receives National Charter

With the receipt of its official charter at the recent Utility Construction EXPO ‘10, NUCA of Nebraska has officially launched and is hitting the ground running. NUCA’s newest chapter has been incorporated as legal entity, thanks to the efforts
of a 24-member Nebraska Steering Committee.

With the bylaws complete and governance in place, the chapter is planning its kickoff membership event to be held this spring, according to NUCA of Nebraska President Kara Habrock. For details, visit the chapter’s Web site at www.NUCAnebraska.com.

NUCA of Las Vegas Holds Successful Auction

NUCA of Las Vegas held its Annual Holiday Dinner and Auction on Dec. 5, 2009, at the Golden Nugget Hotel/Casino ballroom. Guest Speaker for the event was Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons. Governor Gibbons spoke about the future of Nevada and its involvement in renewable energy projects.

Executive Director Dick Schneider stated, “Despite the bleak economic situation in our local utility industry, we had fantastic attendance at this year’s event. The support from the membership was awesome. Our contractor and associate members are always there to help make this a dynamic chapter.”

This was the first year that an Auction Committee was created to obtain all of the donated items for the auction segment, which is a major fundraising event for the chapter. Chairperson Tonya Demirjian and the committee members did an unbelievable job in obtaining interesting items for both the silent and the live auctions.

Once again, Jim Rotlisberger, Regional Manager for Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, provided the staff to conduct the live auction. Tom Hollis, 2010 Vice President, won the Heads or Tails Contest and donated the prize money to the Chapter Scholarship Fund. 2009 President David Rice conducted the installation ceremony for 2010 President Tom O’Rourke, along with the other officers and directors.
