Profit-Pipeline Roundtables: A NUCA Networking Goldmine

The NUCA Education Committee is pleased to announce Profit-Pipeline Roundtables — an executive-level peer-networking experience for construction company owners and senior managers. Participants will exchange real-world knowledge and insights with non-competing executives, returning home with practical business solutions to improve their bottom line. Profit-Pipeline Roundtables will take place on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., the day following the conclusion of Utility Construction EXPO ’10 at the same location.

Participants will be assigned to networking roundtables comprised of six to eight non-competing utility construction and excavation executives, as well as by the type of work performed, by the company and by the size of the company. Each roundtable will discuss revenue-enhancing opportunities and cost-control strategies relevant to profitability. Sample topics include fuel efficiency solutions, health insurance cost controls, unique safety incentive plans, financial management and estimating and bidding strategies, among many others.

All participants will have an opportunity to bring their own unique challenges and questions to the table. Active participation and confidentiality is expected of all registrants. Participants will also be encouraged to share a company best practice or procedure they are especially proud of with their roundtable colleagues. The roundtables are not a place for contractors to sit on the sidelines and observe.

Each roundtable will serve as an advisory board for its members, providing an open and safe networking environment to test ideas, share what works and what doesn’t work — and get honest feedback. Following the initial roundtable sessions, and throughout the ensuing year, participants will be able to turn to their informal “board” for advice, support and connections. The face-to-face group dynamic inherent to this format will prove to be particularly beneficial during this time of severe market conditions. This is powerful networking that will help leaders transition, grow and improve profitability.

The registration fee is $125 for NUCA members. Interested? The registration form is available at www.nuca.com. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact NUCA CEO Bill Hillman if you need additional information, bhillman@nuca.com or (703) 358-9300.

NUCA of Las Vegas Backhoe Rodeo Huge Success

Yeehaw! Thanks to a slew of unique machine challenges and the great people of NUCA of Las Vegas, the Annual Backhoe Rodeo was a success.

Despite the rather grim economy in the Las Vegas area, NUCA of Las Vegas held a successful Annual Backhoe Rodeo in the grassy tailgating area of Sam Boyd Stadium prior to the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) and Brigham Young University (BYU) football game. Over 300 attendees from the utility construction industry enjoyed food and drinks while watching 26 competitors on backhoes attempt to move three raw eggs from a sand-filled tray to a frying pan without breaking them. A second event involved removing and replacing round pipe into square holes of a slightly larger dimension. In the true spirit of tailgating, President Dave Rice brought out the UNLV hearse and positioned the casket filled with ice and beer kegs so that all could participate in the “viewing.” Several exhibitors had tents and tables and passed out free promotional materials and gifts. With approximately 40,000 football fans present for the game, NUCA of Las Vegas and the utility construction community received a lot of exposure. Spectators were amazed by the talents of the backhoe operators.

NUCA Committees Move Ahead at Fall Board Meeting

NUCA held its Fall Board and Committee Meetings Sept. 23-25 in Vancouver, B.C. Seventy NUCA members participated in three days of committee meetings, highlighted with a special tour of the newly-opened Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Worldwide Headquarters. Following the tour, Ritchie Bros. hosted a beautiful dinner cruise through the Burrard Inlet.

NUCA’s committees were hard at work in Vancouver — attendees received up-to-the-minute status reports on a broad range of legislative issues that NUCA’s government relations staff is working on: expanding infrastructure markets; reforming heath care policy to increase opportunities for employers to provide quality health care at an affordable cost; “Card Check” legislation; OSHA reform; and many other legislative initiatives that impact the underground utility construction industry.

The Education Committee reviewed the latest chapter of NUCA Foundation’s Pipelayer Series, Chapter 3, “Working with Pipe.” The Awards Committee selected the winners of the 2009 NUCA Awards of Excellence including: Ditchdigger of the Year, Associate of the Year and the We Dig America Award. The Member and Chapter Relations Committee gave a status update on the formation of new NUCA chapters. The Safety Committee discussed chapter-OSHA Partnership Programs, and The EXPO Host Committee strategized on the new format and recession-buster, early-bird registration specials for EXPO ’10.

In addition, NUCA’s Executive Committee approved a new format for committee meetings for 2010 and a revised, streamlined structure for NUCA’s governing committees. A special four hour session of the Five-Year Strategic Planning Task Force discussed the long-term goals and strategies for the association. Now is the time to get involved in NUCA. With so much going on in our industry, we need your help to keep moving NUCA forward. For information about joining a committee and getting involved, call NUCA at (800) 662-6822.
