Tina Dillon Chairs Steering Committee, Indiana Clean Water Coalition

A temporary Steering Committee established by a group of 35 organizations and chaired by NUCA of Indiana President Tina Dillon (pictured), met in early March to discuss a plan to form a coalition that would develop new funding strategies for water and wastewater infrastructure in Indiana. The detailed plan, titled “A Call to Action: Uniting Defenders of Indiana’s Waters to Address a State of Water Emergency,” was written by Gary Price, President of The Mattison Corp. (TMC). NUCA of Indiana Executive Director Scott Grimes, an officer of TMC, contributed to the plan, and serves on the Steering Committee. Dillon said the plan was the best proposal she had ever seen for getting the active attention of every target audience that needs to be reached in the immediate future. It is with deep regret that NUCA reports the passing of two former members and association award winners.

Harold J. Mueller (1926-2009) Founder and retired Owner of MRM Inc. of New Berlin, Wisc., Harold Mueller passed away on Feb. 16. He was 83. The winner of NUCA’s 1993 Ditchdigger of the Year Award, he served for many years on NUCA’s Board of Directors and was a major supporter of the NUCA PAC, Safety Ambassadors Club and annual Utility Construction EXPOs and Auctions. He was also an active member of both the Wisconsin Underground Contractors Association and Distribution Contractors Association (DCA). He was recently honored by the DCA with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Memorial donations may be made to the Malaika Early Learning Center in Milwaukee.

Michael E. Argent (1954-2009) Founder and former President of the Permalok Corp. of St. Louis, Michael Argent passed away on Feb. 20. He was 54. The winner of NUCA’s 1992 Associate of the Year Award, he served for many years on NUCA’s board of directors and as chair of the Trenchless Excavation Committee (1988-90). Recognized as one of the industry’s true visionaries, he was a motivating force behind the growth of trenchless technology among NUCA members and around the United States. He was also one of the founding directors of the North American Society for Trenchless Technology in 1990 and served on the board of directors for four years. Vice President of Sales at Pittsburgh Pipe when he won the Associate award, he went on to invent “Permalok” — a steel pipe joining system for trenchless installation and rehabilitation (patent issued 1999) — and found the Permalok Corp. Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

GUCA Members Shoot Clays for Scholarships

The GUCA Scholarship Foundation held its 2009 Scholarship Foundation Sporting Clays at the Cherokee Rose Shooting Resort in Griffin, Ga., on Tuesday, April 14. The proceeds from this annual event support scholarships that are awarded to college-bound GUCA member children. More than 20 scholarships have been awarded within the past four years. This year’s first-place tournament winner was the Newton County Water & Sewerage Authority team (pictured), which included Andy Harvill, Beverly Cole, Clifford Rollins and Stuart Stokes, with a team score of 351.
